31/08/04 Académica drew 2-2 at home to Sporting Braga Monday on a potato field of a pitch at the brand new Estádio Municipal de Coimbra
. Despite the pitch, both sides managed some good football. Académica went one up on 5 minutes through midfielder Ricardo Fernandes, then Paulo Jorge equalised on 18. Joeano put 'Os
Estudantes' back in front on 27, but at the beginning of the second half Ricardo Fernandes got his second goal to fix the final result. There will now be a two-week break from the SuperLiga
due to international games, although Vitória de Guimarães v Académica
has been brought forward to 5 September. The game will be played at Rio Ave's ground as Vitória's stadium has been banned for one game following incidents with fans at Vitória's visit to Paços de Ferreira last season.
30/08/04 Benfica emulated local rivals Sporting with a 3-2 win in their first SuperLiga game of the season, at Beira-Mar. It was the SuperLiga début for two
foreign coaches Englishman Mick Wadsworth for the home side, Italian Giovanni Trapattoni
for Benfica. It was an even enough first half, with Benfica just edging it on chances, and they went two-up just before the break, Karadas
knocking in a Petit corner on 41 minutes and the Norwegian returning the favour on 45, slipping the ball through for Petit to prod home from close range.
Five minutes into the second half it looked all over, Benfica going three-up through Karadas
again, capitalising on confusion in the Beira-Mar box to bundle in. But then in a five minute spell Beira-Mar were back in it, Alvarez heading in from a corner on 62 and Beto
driving a long-range free kick in with the help of a deflection off Miguel. Like Sporting the night before, Benfica were made to seat it out to get the three points, but in the end Beira-Mar didn't have the bite to get there.
Boavista and Nacional slogged out a frequently bad-tempered game at the Bessa, with very little coherent play from either side and few chances. Martelinho, on as sub at half time, volleyed in at
the far post from a Zé Manuel cross to give Boavista the win. Nacional had a first-half 'goal' by Adriano disallowed for offside. Newcomers Penafiel suffered the heaviest defeat of the day, going down 1-4
at home to Vitória de Setúbal. Meyong put the visitors in front after just eight minutes, but Penafiel, whose president is former Portugal coach António Oliveira, equalised five minutes later through
Roberto. On 35 minutes, Clayton mssed a penalty for the home side, then shortly after they were reduced to ten men when Pedro Moreira was sent off. Auri and José Rui
got early goals in the second half to knock the stuffing out of Penafiel, although Vitória were pulled up slightly with the expulsion of Bruno Riberio for a second yellow. But Igor
confirmed the result with a goal in added time. Other newcomers Estoril drew 0-0 at home to Rio Ave, and identical score to that of the meeting between Moreirense and
Vitória de Guimarães. 29/08/04 The SuperLiga got off to a great start Saturday with two excellent games. First up was a fresh looking and adventurous
Belenenses side, seemingly transformed under new coach Carlos Carvalhal, against Marítimo, who play Glasgow Rangers in the first round of the UEFA Cup. Belenenses central defender Rolando, 18, had the
honour of scoring the first goal of the season on 25 miunutes, much against the run of play, it must be said. But when Antchouet
netted the second on the stroke of half-time, it was going to be difficult for the Madeiran side to catch up. And so it proved in the second half, Belenenses looking the much more compact side and with more ideas. When
Lourenço, on loan from Sporting, made it 3-0
from the spot on the hour, it was all over. And if anyone from Rangers was watching, they'll feel like they have a good chance against a Marítimo side that looked very rusty. Later in the evening, Sporting
appeared to be coasting as early as the 25th minute against Gil Vicente, a Marcos António own goal and one from Liedson giving them a good cushion. Marcos António
atoned a quarter of an hour from the end, only for Liedson to restore the two-goal cushion a minute later. But when Fábio
pulled another one back ten minutes from time, it meant a nail-biting end for the home side, but they held on for the 3-2 win. 28/08/04 The much awaited SuperLiga
starts this Saturday. The first game of the season is Belenenses v Marítimo, followed by Sporting v Gil Vicente. State TV channel RTP will televise two SuperLiga
games to the world each weekend via its satellite/cable channels RTP Internacional and RTP África. One of the games will be live, and one delayed. This weekend, Sporting v Gil Vicente
will be live on Saturday, Beira-Mar v Benfica delayed on Sunday. 07/08/04 Cable channel SportTV has nabbed the rights to all Superliga
games for the coming season. There will be four games televised each weekend, including all those involving the Três Grandes
- Porto, Benfica and Sporting - and SportTv will show three of them, with the Terrestrial channels RTP (state owned), SIC and TVI vying for the other one. One of the latter group of channels will be able to show one of the games involving the TGs each weekend.
