In a crazy two-week period, midfielder Danny has been transferred from Dynamo Moscow to Zenit for 30 million euros, a Russian record, he has been selected for the Portuguese squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Denmark, and on Friday he scored the winner and was voted Man of the Match as Zenit beat Manchester United to take the European SuperCup in Mónaco.

Benfica's Chinese striker Yu Dabao has fractured a toe in training and will be out of action for three months. The player was due to be loaned out this season.

Former Boavista midfielder Rui Bento has been named successor to coach Jaime Pacheco, who resigned on Tuesday. Bento was in Boavista's title-winning side under Pacheco in 2000/01. He has recently been coach of Penafiel.

Jaime Pacheco has quit as Boavista coach just days before the new league campaign begins. He has been in coaching for 17 years, nine of which with the Panteras; taking them to their one and only title in 2000/2001. He has also been in charge at Vitória de Guimarães and at Spanish club Mallorca. Boavista the club is in dire straits financially and has been relegated to the second tier (Liga Vitalis) for alleged ref-rigging in the 2003/04 season.

Sporting beat FC Porto 2-0 on Saturday in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira (between last season's Champions and Taça de Portugal winners) to make it two Supertaças and a Taça de Portugal that they have won over the northerners in two seasons. In front of 23,000 at the Estádio do Algarve, Sporting always looked the more composed of the two teams, but they also had their share of luck. Lucho González hit the post in the first half before Yannick Djaló took advantage of some slack defending to sweep a Romagnoli pass home on the stroke of half time. The same player found himself free in front of goal after some bumbling by Sapunaru on 57 minutes to make it 2-0. Porto had a chance to make a game of it on 73 minutes when Lucho González strode up to take a spot-kick after Caneira had handled in the box, but his low shot to the right of the goal was palmed around the post by Ru Patrício, who had earlier touched over a dipping shot by Raul Meireles and made several other top quality saves.

The teams lined up.

FC Porto: Helton, Sapunaru, Bruno Alves, Pedro Emanuel, Benítez, Guarín (Candeias 70), Raul Meireles, Lucho González, Lisandro, Rodriguez, Farías (Hulk 56).

Sporting: Rui Patrício, Abel, Tonel, Polga, Caneira, João Moutinho, Rochemback, Izmailov, Romagnoli (Miguel Veloso 68), Derlei (Postiga 82), Yannick Djaló (Pereirinha 90).

It was Sporting's seventh Supertaça, the first edition of which was in the 1979/80 season.

Boavista have been allowed to register to play in the Liga Vitalis (second tier), the only fully professional division after the Liga Sagres (top tier). The club was previously prevented from registering because of debts to the taxman and Social Security of around 15 million euros. It requested authorisation from the authorities to pay the debt off in instalments, and the request itself was enough to open the doors to registration with the Liga. Meanwhile, however, the request for phased payment was turned down by the authorities, but it is believed that the registration, allowed by the Liga merely on the basis of proof of request, will be difficult to reverse.

Nacional president Rui Alves has bee suspended for 75 days after sending an abusive SMS message to União de Leiria president João Bartolomeu.

Gil Vicente have been docked three points (from last season's tally) for one of their directors trying to bribe Olhanense midfielder Guga before a Liga de Honra (second tier) game in May.

Portugal won the 8th beach football Mundialito on Sunday, beating Brazil 5-4 in a thrilling final in Portimão, Algarve. Portugal's Madjer scored the winner, was top scorer in the tournament (eight goals) and was voted Player of the Tournament.

02/08/08

After being relegated for (still 'alleged' – the case is going through the common courts)  match rigging by the Liga, Boavista have until 11 August to come up with a list of at least 12 senior players in order to be registered for the Liga Vitalis (second tier). The club has a debt of 15 million with the State (tax and Social Security), and does not therefore have a certificate from the authorities to say that they are paid up. Without the certificate they cannot register players. It is a Catch 22 situation which may see the historic club (105 years old) close at a professional level. Meanwhile, captain Mário Silva and midfielder Luís Loureiro have rescinded their contracts with the club, while João Tomás and Edgar are likely to follow suit.
