Quique Flores, 43, was presented as the new Benfica coach on Saturday and will, in principle, stay for two seasons. The Spanish coach, formerly at Getafe and more recently at Valência, said that he could make no promises, but that one of his objectives was "to make Benfica competitive again."

Two Portuguese players (Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani) and a Portuguese coach (Carlos Queiróz) were deliriously happy, three Portuguese players (Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira and Hilário) downcast on Wednesday: Manchester United beat Chelsea on penalties in the Champions League Final in Moscow. Cristiano Ronaldo put Manchester United in front in the first half with a perfectly executed header, while Frank Lampard equalised just before half time. The match went to extra time and penalties: Cristiano Ronaldo missed his in the first round ("This could have been the worst day of my life!") but was saved from disgrace by a miss from John Terry and a Van der Sar save from Anelka. Nani scored his penalty in the second round.

Cristiano Ronaldo, with eight goals, was the top scorer in this season's Champions League.

Manchester United coach Carlos Queiróz said after the game that Cristiano Ronaldo will be remaining at the club next season.

Jorge Jesus, who took Belenenses to the brink of Europe, will be Sporting Braga's coach for the next two years.

Troubled Boavista and coach Jaime Pacheco have parted company.

Coach Manuel Machado has returned to Madeiran club Nacional from Sporting Braga, replacing Jokanovic..

Paulo Sérgio, formerly of Olhanense, Santa Clara and Beira-Mar, is to take over from José Mota at Paços de Ferreira , while José Mota moves to Leixões.

Pedro Alves, ex-coach of Gil Vicente, will be in charge of União de Leiria next year.

Ex-Estrela da Amadora coach Daúto Faquirá has been presented as Vitória de Setúbal's coach, taking over from Carlos Carvalhal , who has moved to Greece.

Sporting striker Liedson will be out of action for at least four months after undergoing surgery on his left knee.

Coach Daúto Faquirá is to move from Estrela da Amadora to Vitória de Setúbal on a two-year contract.

Paços de Ferreira have parted company with coach José Mota after the club came second to bottom of the Liga and was relegated to the second tier (subject to an appeal by Boavista against their relegation for interference with referees).

After failing to clinch promotion to the top division, Gil Vicente have parted company with coach Paulo Alves, who looks set to join União de Leiria, relegated from the top division.

Paulo Sérgio has resigned as coach of Liga de Honra side Beira-Mar, citing the disorganisation of the club as a reason.

The Disciplinary Committee of the Liga de Clubes announced on Friday its decisions in respect of the so-called 'Final Whistle' process, an off-shoot of the 'Golden Whistle' referee-bribing trial currently in progress in the criminal courts. The facts relate to the 2003-04 season and three clubs – FC Porto, Boavista and União de Leiria – who were accused of either bribing or putting pressure on referees and linesmen in return for favours on the pitch. All three clubs and their presidents, as well as a number of match officials, were found guilty.

The penalties are as follows:

Boavista:
- Relegation
- Fine of 180 thousand euros

F.C. Porto:
- Docking of six points from this season's total (2007/08)
- Fine of 150 thousand euros

União de Leiria:
- Docking of three points from this season's total (2007/08)
- Fine of 4 thousand euros

Pinto da Costa (president of FC Porto):
- Two years' suspension
- Fine of 10 thousand euros

João Loureiro (ex-president of Boavista):
- Four years' suspension
- Fine of 25 thousand euros

João Bartolomeu (president of União de Leiria):
- One year's suspension
- Fine of 40 thousand euros

Referee Augusto Duarte:
- Six years' suspension

Referee Jacinto Paixão:
- Four years' suspension

Referee Martins dos Santos:
- Three years' suspension

Linesmen José Chilrito, Manuel Quadrado and Bernardino Silva:
- Two and a half years' suspension

All of the decisions are subject to appeal to the Football Federation's Council of Justice. Boavista are to appeal against their relegation, while FC Porto and União de Leiria will not appeal since the points to be docked relate to this season; Porto have a 20 point advantage at the top and União are already relegated anyway. However, all the presidents involved are to appeal against their penalties.

If Boavista are relegated, their place in the top flight will be taken by Paços de Ferreira or Leixões, one of which would otherwise be relegated along with União de Leiria.

The Board of Directors of Boavista FC resigned following the decision to releagte the club. The Board of Boavista SAD (the financial face of the club) resigned in the week in the light of the awful financial difficulties the club is going through.

Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira, accompanied by soon-to-be Director of Football Rui Costa and legal consultant Paulo Gonçalves were in Manchester on Wednesday to try to convince Mancester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson to take over as coach at the club. The Swede was at Benfica from 1982-84 and from 1989-92. During his spells at the club he won three Portuguese titles (1982/83, 1983/84 and 1990/91), a Taça de Portugal (1983) and a Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira (1989), and took the Eagles to the Final of the UEFA Cup (1983) and the European Cup (1990). Meanwhile, according to the English press, Portugal coach Luíz Felipe Scolari is favourite to take over from Eriksson at City.

Cluj clinched the Romanian title for the first time in their history Wednesday with a 1-0 win over Universitatea on the last day of the season. The winner was scored from the spot by Portuguese centre back Cadu on the hour. Cluj also fielded the Portuguese emigrants Tony, Dani and Semedo, with Manuel José coming on in the second half. Other Portuguese players currently on Cluj's books are Nuno Claro, Fredy and André Leão.

Other Portuguese exports were also on target: in Italy a goal from Pelé helped Inter Milan to a 2-0 win over Lázio and the consequent passage to the Final of the Italian Cup; and in Germany, a goal from Hugo Almeida in a 1-0 win over Hamburg took Werder Bremen up to second in the table.

Sporting's star striker Liedson is expected to be out for the rest of the season after twisting a knee against Marítimo at the weekend; the Brazilian may have to undergo surgery. Also out for the same reason are Wesley and Paulo Sousa of Paços de Ferreira. Wesley especially will be sorely missed by Paços in their fight against relegation.

Benfica's veteran midfielder Rui Costa is to be awarded a gold medal by the City of Lisbon as he nears the end of a long career; he will hang up his boots in ten days' time. During his time at Benfica, Fiorentina, AC Milan and Benfica again, Rui Costa won an U-20 World Cup, a Portuguese title, a Taça de Portugal, an Italian title, three Italian Cups, and Italian Supercup, a European Supercup and a European Cup. He made 94 appearances for the Portuguese national team, scoring 26 goals.

Varzim of the Liga de Honra (second tier) won the first Liga Intercalar Wednesday, beating Sporting Braga 2-1 at Trofense's stadium. João Tomás put Braga in front on 38 minutes, but Malafaia equalised from the spot on 69. The game went to extra time, with Candeias , on loan from FC Porto, getting the winner for Varzim.

The Liga Intercalar was a competition organised by the Porto Football Association to allow squad players to get a run out in competitive games. Entrance to games was free, and the competition was a modest success.

The Portuguese international and former Lyon, Chelsea and Benfica midfielder Tiago, now with Italian giants Juventus, has been voted the worst signing in the Italian league this season by readers of Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

Former FC Porto, Sporting and Beira-Mar striker Mário Jardel has confessed on a Brazilian TV show to having been addicted to cocaine, which he says he has now quit. Former team-mate at Jardel's first club Grêmio, Paulo Nunes, has said that the striker picked up the habit while he was at FC Porto, the separation from his wife Karen compounding the problem.
