Saturday saw the annual All-Star Game for charity, organised by Luís Figo for his Foundation, at Alvalade (14,000). It finished 5-4 to Figo's Team, which included Brazilian singer/writer Chico Buarque, in his 60s. Zinedine Zidane started for the World Eleven. The goals were scored by: Cocu, Ibrahimovic (2), Linz (2), Paulo Ferreira, Sá Pinto and Ricardo Quaresma (2).

FC Porto beat newly-promoted Leixões 1-0 Sunday in front of 38,000 at the Dragão, in a game to celebrate both this year's title and the 20th anniversary of Porto's European Cup victory over Bayern Munich. Lisandro Lopes got the only goal after just two minutes. Vítor Baía left the field early in the second half to a standing ovation: this was his last game in a Porto shirt.

After drawing 0-0 with Toronto, Benfica played the second and final game of their mini-tour of North America, beating AEK Athens 2-1. AEK were 1-0 up after five minutes through former Benfica winger Manduca but were level on 32 minutes when Bourbos put through his own goal from a corner. Benfica steadily gained the upper hand in the second half, Rui Costa netting from a Paulo Jorge pass.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper William said goodbye to Boavista with a friendly between the club he's been with for the last nine years and a team made up of friends of his (Amigos de William). In an almost empty Bessa Stadium, Boavista 'won' 6-2; Samuel Eto'o, Geremi and Roger Milla, top of the bill, did not turn up.

Benfica beat Bayern Munich on penalties in the Dubai tournament Monday after the game had finished 0-0. Moretto, in the Benfica goal, saved two penalties. The tournament pays 500,000 euros for the participating teams, 1,000,000 if they get to the Final (Lázio, who beat Maseilles, play Benfica in the Final on Wednesday) and 1,500,000 to the winners.

Sporting officially closed their centenary celebrations and presented the squad to the fans Monday with a friendly against Inter Milan at Alvalade. The game finished goal-less, meaning that Sporting have gone unbeaten in the pre-season. Before the match, the club paid tribute to Luís Figo, who was made Inter's captain on the night. Inter's Materazzi was sent off on 63 minutes for a second yellow.

Inter Milan are in Lisbon ahead of their friendly at Alvalade Monday: the official presentation of the Sporting squad to their fans. Inter's Luís Figo said: "I'm happy to be returning to Portugal and to play against a team that I know well and in which I learnt my trade."

Académica won their first game of the pre-season Wednesday, beating Boavista 2-0 with goals from Gelson on 35 minutes and Essame, an own goal, ten minutes from time. It was Boavista's first game under caretaker coach Pedro Barny.

Benfica beat Estrela da Amadora 2-1 Tuesday in the official presentation of the Estrela side, played (in front of very few fans on a bank holiday) at Belenenses' Restelo stadium (Estrela's is undergoing a major renovation). Estrela took the lead on 20 minutes with a low shot from outside the area by Cleiton that found its way beyond Moreira's left hand. Mexican striker 'Kikin' Fonseca got his first goal for the club on 38 minutes, a looping header from a corner, and Mantorras slotted in the winner on 51.

Naval beat União de Leiria 4-1, União's first defeat of the pre-season. Gilmar put Naval in front on 20 minutes, Slusarski equalised two minutes later, but then it was all Naval: Nei just before half time, and Cazarine and Pimenta late in the game gave Naval a clear victory.

Estrela da Amadora drew 1-1 Sunday at Spanish club Levante, including Laurent Robert and Meyong, transferred from Benfica and Belenenses respectively. Marco Paulo got the Estrela goal.

Two clubs were in England on Saturday.

FC Porto, under provisional coach Rui Barros, beat Manchester City 1-0 with an Adriano header from a Raul Meireles corner on 42 minutes.

Sporting Braga won the 12th Quinocho Memorial Trophy, beating Celta de Vigo 2-1 in Melgaço. Ricardo Chaves and Zé Carlos from the spot put Braga 2-0 up in the first half. The game was played in Melgaço in the north of Portugal, because of the poor state of Celta's pitch.

Ivanildo got an early goal for União de Leiria and it was enough to beat Belenenses in Fátima. União have won all eight of their pre-season games under new coach Domingos Paciência, the former FC Porto striker.

In their official presentation game, Beira-Mar lost 0-1 to Marítimo with a goal by Gregory five minutes from time. There were just 1,500 spectators in the 30,000 capacity Estádio Municipal de Aveiro.

An impressive Sporting became the first Portuguese club to win the Colombino Trophy Thursday, beating local side Recreativo de Huelva 3-0 in the Final. Farnerud and Ronny put Sporting two-up before half time, and the excellent Liedson put the cherry on the cake three minutes from time. Sporting have won all their pre-season games bar one, which they drew.

Lisandro put FC Porto in front on 11 minutes at Portsmouth, but a mistake by Pepe let in Todorov on 22. In the second half, a free-kick by Marek Cech was deflected past his 'keeper by Leroy Primus to give Porto a 2-1 win.

After a weak first half when they went down to a Kanouté goal, Sporting came back splendidly in the second to beat Seville 4-2 in the Colombino Trophy in Huelva, south of Spain. João Moutinho and Liedson put Sporting ahead early in the second half, Kanouté got a second on the hour to equalise, then Liedson again, from the spot, and Djaló decided it for Sporting. Seville had two players sent off in added time, Puerta for elbowing Abel, Kanouté for disputing the decision. Sporting now play local side Recreativo in the Final on Thursday, while Seville play Bolton (who lost to Huelva on Tuesday).

FC Porto beat Dutch side Rijnsburgse Boys 5-2 Tuesday, with goals from Lisandro Lopez (2), Cech and Jorginho (2). Adriano was sent off ten miniutes into the second half.

Sporting drew 1-1 at Sporting Braga Saturday in the official presentation of the home side. The result was made midway through the first half, Zé Carlos heading in a Luís Filipe cross on 25 minutes and Carlos Martins equalising for Sporting with a drive from a Romagnoli lay-off five minutes later.

FC Porto conceded three for the second time at the Amsterdam Tournament, going down 2-3 to Inter Milan. Porto were 3-0 down at half time, Pizarro and Martins (2) doing the damage, but they clawed back two goals through Adriano on 80 and Marek Cech in added time, the latter a superb overhead kick.

On Friday, FC Porto lost 1-3 to Manchester United in the same tournament. Manchester were two up after 20 minutes through Scholes and Rooney (both later sent off) and they went three up on 73 minutes through Soljskaer. Pepe pulled one back on 75 with a terrific drive from outside the box.

 "I was pleased with the way we battled," said Porto coach Co Adriaanse, "but the problem is that Manchester United have top players. Apart from a striker, we also need more quality in our crosses. At times, our talent is limited ... but we're going to work to improve that. We have a lot of talent but sometimes it's not enough. Apart from the problem of finishing, we made some mistakes in defence."

Académica could do no more than draw 1-1 at Feirense of the Liga de Honra. Nestor Alvarez put Académica in front on 73 minutes, but Feirense equalised on the stroke of time through Hélder Ferreira.

Benfica lost their third pre-season game in a row Tuesday, going down 1-3 away to AEK Athens. Apart from the result, the poor quality of the performance is also worrying benfiquistas, especially since the club have a champions League qualifier coming up against Austria Vienna. AEK's goals were scored by Kapetanos (2) and Liberopoulos, with Paulo Jorge pulling one back just before half time for Benfica with a header at the back post after a cross from the left by Manú.

Vitória de Setúbal travelled up the river Tagus to meet Barreirense Wednesday and, as expected, beat them, 2-1, with goals from new signing Lourenço and Ademar.

Carlos Fernandes and João Pinto in the first half and Paulo Jorge in the second gave Sporting Braga a 3-0 win over Penafiel.

Ricadro Sousa scored from a free-kick on eight minutes to give Boavista a 1-0 win at Varzim.

FC Porto beat AS Roma 1-0 Sunday, Mexes putting a Quaresma cross through his own goal on 38 minutes, in the official presentation of the squad in front of around 50,000 at the Estádio do Dragão,

Benfica lost for the second time in two days, going down 0-1 to Deportivo La Coruña in the Guadiana Tournament in the Algarve. A Sérgio shot on four minutes, which was palmed into his own net by Moretto, was enough to send a clueless Benfica home pointless.

On Friday Benfica had lost 0-3 to eternal rivals Sporting, the goals coming from Yannick Djaló (2) and a spectacular own goal from Katsouranis, lunging to take the ball off Carlos Martins on the halfway line but punting it over the head of 'keeper Moreira, off his line.

FC Porto beat the amateurs of Heracles Almelo 1-0 Thursday in their last tour match in Holland. Brazilian striker Bruno Morães, back after a long lay-off through injury, scored the only goal on 40 minutes.

Helton, Pedro Emanuel, Pepe, Marek Cech, Paulo Assunção, Ibson, Raul Meireles, Anderson, Sektioui, Bruno Moraes, Vieirinha. Plus: Adriano, Ezequias, Alan, Jorginho, Ricardo Quaresma.

In the official presentation of the squad, Gil Vicente beat Sporting Braga 3-1 with goals from Edinho, Rovérsio and Mateus, Maciel replying for Braga.

Vitória de Setúbal beat Nacional 2-1 Saturday, with two goals from new signing Lourenço. Chilikov replied for Nacional.

Naval beat modest Nelas 1-0, the goal coming from Saulo.

FC Porto thrashed amateur side Rigsterbleek 13-0 in Holland Tuesday. The goals came from Adriano (2), Quaresma (2), Vieirinha (2), Bruno Moraes (3), Jorginho, Raúl Meireles, João Paulo and Sektioui.

Benfica beat Bordeaux 2-0 at the Luz Saturday in what was the official presentation of the team. Miccoli got the first on 15 minutes, a neat overhead kick after the goalkeeper collided with a defender and dropped the ball. Marcel got the second on 66, diving header from sub Paulo Jorge. The latter was on the field just five minutes before seeing a red card for trading slaps with Jurietti, who was also sent off. The game was notable for the return to the Luz of Rui Costa, much applauded when substituted in the second half, the return also of Nuno Assis after his suspension for doping, and the absence of Simão Sabrosa, prompting speculation that he will soon be leaving the club.

FC Porto faced their first real test of the pre-season and had difficulty at Groningen, who came fifth in the Dutch league last season. The Porto defence failed to clear on 13 minutes, letting in Nevdland for an easy goal. Porto improved in the second half and drew level on the hour, Bosingwa crossing for Adriano to score. On 66 minutes, Nevdland got his second, beating Helton in the one-on-one. It was left to Bosingwa to save Porto's blushes with an individual effort in the closing minutes.

Académica drew 1-1 with Paços de Ferreira. Jean Carlos put Paços in front on 23 minutes, Gelson equalised for Os Estudantes on the hour.

Gil Vicente beat Varzim 1-0 with a Nandinho penalty.

The first Sporting v Benfica clássico of the season will be a 'friendly', in Vila Real de Santo António, in the Algarve, on 27 July, in the Guadiana Tournament. On 29 July Sporting face Déportivo de la Coruña in the same competition. Both games begin at 21.15.

FC Porto beat Dutch amateurs Rohda Raalte 6-0 Tuesday. The goals were scored by Jorginho, Ibson, Raul Meireles and Adriano in the first half and Benni McCarthy in the second.

Porto's line up in the first half was: Helton, Pedro Emanuel, Pepe, Paulo Assunção, Cech, Raul Meireles, Sektioui, Ibson, Adriano, Jorginho and Quaresma. In the second half, it was: Paulo Ribeiro, Bruno Alves, João Paulo, Ezequias, Raul Meireles, Diogo Valente, Vieirinha, Anderson, Sokota, Benni McCarthy and Alan.

Académica and Beira-Mar drew 0-0 in a friendly in Avanca. Mário Jardel is not yet fit and did not make his début for Beira-Mar. Vitória de Setúbal could also only draw 0-0 , at home to Alcobaça.

Boavista beat amateurs Melgacense 9-0 with goals from Fary (2), Lucas, Essame, Roland Linz, Kazmierczack, Ricardo Sousa, Marcos António and Tambussi, the latter five new to the club (although Ricardo Sousa returns from Hanover).

Benfica lost their last friendly in Switzerland Saturday, making it two wins out of three. Sion proved a tougher nut to crack than the previous two opponents, and were two-up within 40 minutes through ex-Benfiquista João Manuel Pinto and Obradovic. Mantorras, on for the exhausted Miccoli after just 36 minutes, pulled one back for Benfica a minute before the break, but they went two-down again on 81 through Reset. Rui Costa, Benfica's best player, made it 2-3 on 83 with a solo effort and shot from the edge of the box, but that was all Benfica could manage.

Benfica won their second friendly of the pre-season, beating Ukrainian champions Shaktar Donetsk 2-0 in Switzerland. The win had a Greek flavour about it: Katsouranis scored from the spot on 18 minutes, and Karagounis got the second with a chip on the half-hour.

Benfica played their first game of the season Saturday, a friendly against Swiss third division amateurs Stade Nyonnais. The Lisbon giants won 3-0 with two goals from Brazilian striker Marcel (his first in seven months) and one from Canales. Rui Costa returned to the fold and played a very decent first half.

The Benfica squad for the coming season will be officially presented to sócios in a friendly against Bordeaux at the Luz on 22 July.

Sporting play in the 42nd edition of the Colombino Trophy in Huelva in August, along with local side Recreativo, Seville and Bolton. Sporting play Seville on 9 August, and the Final is on the 10th.

Boavista play two frendlies in England in July: on the 26th, they meet Crystal Palace, on the 29th Coventry.
