At the weekend, Trofense shipped three goals in half an hour at Sporting. On Wednesday, the Sporting players found out how it felt, conceding three in 25 minutes at Real Madrid in the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy. Sporting coach Paulo Bento had decided to field an under-strength side to start, possibly with an eye on Monday's Liga vist to Sporting Braga, but the decision proved disastrous. Although Izmailov pulled a goal back on the half-hour to off-set two from Higuaín and one from Robben, Madrid got two more before the break from Raúl and an own goal by Pedro Silva. Sporting went in with their tails between their legs at 1-5, but it was something nearer a first-choice eleven that came out for the second half, and that fact coupled with an easing off by Real let the Lions back into the game. They 'won' the second half 2-0 with goals from Yannick and Miguel Veloso, but the final 3-5 scoreline was flattering to a Sporting side that had looked like a third division outfit in the first half.

The teams lined up:

Real Madrid: Dudek (Codina 46), Sergio Ramos (Torres 46), Pepe (Cannavaro 46), Metzelder (Javi García 46), Marcelo (Heinze 77), Gago (Diarra 64), Guti (De la Red 46), Van der Vaart, Robben (Drenthe 46), Raúl (Van Nistelrooy 46), Higuaín.

Sporting: Rui Patricio (Tiago 46), Pedro Silva (Abel 46), Caneira (Adrien 76), Polga, Ronny (Tonel 46), Pereirinha (Romagnoli 60), Miguel Veloso, Rochemback (João Moutinho 46), Izmailov, Rodrigo Tiui (Yannick 46), Hélder Postiga.

The teams lined up.

Benfica: Quim, Maxi Pereira, Luisão, Katsouranis, Léo, Ruben Amorim, Carlos Martins, Yebda, Urreta, Aimar, Cardozo. Also: Balboa, Reyes, David Luiz, Nélson, Nuno Gomes, Fellipe Bastos, Binya.

The Big Three had good weekends, all winning their friendlies.

In front of 38,000 at the Dragão on Sunday, FC Porto looked stylish and together in the first half against Lázio before becoming a little incoherent with the second half substitutions. Bruno Alves crashed in a shot from 25 metres on 15 minutes to put Porto in front, and Lucho González finished off a pass from the impressive Cristiano Rodriguez three minutes later. It looked like it might be a rout, but the only other goal was scored on 73 minutes by Lázio's Ledesma.

The teams lined up:

FC Porto: Helton (Nuno 46), Sapunaru (Fucile 65), Pedro Emanuel (Stepanov 65), Bruno Alves (Rolando 46), Benitez (Lino 46), Raul Meireles (Farias 65), Lucho Gonzalez (Bolatti 82), Guarin (Tomas Costa 46), Mariano (Candeias 82), Lisandro (Hulk 46), Rodrigues (Fernando 65).

On Saturday, Sporting beat another Italian team, Sampdoria, 2-0 in front of just 18,000 at Alvalade.

Derlei, with a speculative shot that went through Mirante's legs on 24 minutes, and captain Moutinho from the spot on 82, got the goals. Moutinho's penalty brought him back into favour with most of the sportinguistas present after weeks of controversy in which he has expressed a wish to leave the club. Sampdoria's Campagnaro was sent off for a nasty foul on Rochemback on the stroke of half time.

The teams lined up:

Sporting: Rui Patrício, Abel, Tonel, Polga, Grimi, Moutinho, Rochemback, Izmailov, Romagnoli, Derlei, Yannick. Also: Tiago, Caneira, Miguel Veloso, Pereirinha, Postiga, Ronny, Tiuí, Adrien.

Down the road, there were 43,000 in the Luz to see the début of Spanish forward Reyes, who came on as sub in the second half of Benfica's 1-0 win over Feyenoord. Benfica are looking more together with each game and looked for a change like a cohesive unit in the first half. Cardozo hit the post and scored one on 70 minutes, converting a pass from Aimar.

The teams lined up:

Benfica: Quim, Maxi Pereira, Luisão, Katsouranis, Léo, Rúben Amorim, Yebda, Carlos Martins, Urreta, Aimar, Cardozo. Also: Balboa, Sidnei, Nuno Gomes, Makukula, Nélson, Binya, Fellipe Bastos, Reyes, Miguel Vítor.

Marítimo lined up: Marcos, Fernando Cardozo, Miguelito, Carlos Fernandes, Olberdam, Djalma, João Luiz, Manú, Zé Gomes, Joao Gilherme, Pedro Moutinho. Also: Fernando, Debray, Paulo Jorge, Bruno Fogaça

Second half goals from Rufete and Tamudo gave visitors Español a 2-0 win at a poor Belenenses.

The teams lined up:

Belenenses: Júlio César, Cândido Costa (Baiano 77), Carciano (Vanderlei 88), Rodrigo Arroz (Matheus 88), China, Gómez (Alicio 90), Mano (Vinicius 77), Silas, José Pedro (Maykon 88), Roncatto (João Paulo Oliveira 46), Marcelo (Júnior Negão 77).

Naval beat Sporting Covilhã 2-0 with goals from Marinho and Marcelinho, both in the first half.

05/08/08

Benfica won their first game of the pre-season on Monday, beating hosts Vitória de Guimarães 2-1 to win the City of Guimarães Tournament. It was a rather ramshackle  and at times bad-tempered affair, Benfica's goals coming from Cardozo, a penalty on 13 minutes after Urreta had been brought down in the box and an own goal by Momba after a cross by Aimar, while Vitória's response was also from the spot, Moreno scoring after Léo had handled.
