Boavista drew 0-0 Tuesday with Dynmao Moscow at Sporting's Academia training camp. The Russian side, who have taken players like Derlei and Boavista's Fréchaut from the Portuguese game, have come south to escape the harsh weather at home while they train.

Belenenses and Benfica drew 2-2 Thursday in a game to commemorate Belenenses' 85th birthday. The scorers of the goals were Argel and Geovanni for Benfica and Lourenço (penalty) and Brasilia for Belenses.

After eleven straight wins so far this season, including the first SuperLiga game 3-0 at home to Marítimo, Belenenses met their match Saturday in Cairo against Egyptian champions Al-Ahly, managed by former Belenenses coach Manuel José. The score left no room for doubt: 4-0.

FC Porto have cancelled their trip to Freiburg to play a  friendly against the local side, initially arranged as a part of the deal that took Martin Pavlin to the German side in th 2000/01 season.

An unimpressive Sporting beat Italian club Chievo of Verona 1-0 Saturday in the presentation game for the new season. The only goal was scored by Brazilian striker Liedson a minute into the second half.

Boavista and Sporting drew 1-1 at the Bessa Wednesday in a useful test for both sides and one that was not marked by the same violence as the Boavista v FC Porto game Sunday. Rogério put Sporting in front from the spot on 51 minutes after ´keeper William had brought down Liedson, but central defender Hélder Rosário headed in from a corner on 63 to equalise.

Local rivals Boavista and FC Porto almost literally fought out a 0-0 draw Sunday in a so-called 'friendly' to present Boavista's squad to their fans. The first twenty minutes or so were uneventful but contained some quite flowing football from both sides. Then on 24 minutes, Boavista's Toñito lunged into a tackle on Derlei (who was subsequently stretchered off) and there were lively scuffles on the pitch among the players. The rest of the game was taken up with foul after foul - 65 in all - and no goals or goalmouth incident to speak of.

Sporting lost the match for third place in the Teresa Herrera tournament in Coruña against Zaragoza. Soriano and Savio got the first half goals that gave the Spanish side the win.

Benfica travelled the few kilometers along the Linha de Cascais to Estoril Saturday to beat Estoril Praia 2-0 . The score was settled before half-time through Zahovic and João Vilela. Benfica 'keeper Quim saved a penalty on 80 minutes.

Sporting put in a good overall performance but lost 0-2 to Deportivo La Coruña Friday in the first game of the Teresa Herrera trophy in Coruña. Pablo Amo on 41 minutes and Acuña ten minutes from time got the goals. Sporting play either Atlético Madrid or Zaragoza Sunday for third place.

FC Porto drew 1-1 with Panathinaikos Wednesday in a friendly to present the Porto squad to Portistas. The score was settled in the first half, Gonzalez scoring on 26 minutes, McCarthy equalising on the stroke of half time.

Mick Wadsworth's Beira-Mar, in impressive form in this pre-season, beat Español of Barcelona 2-0 Saturday. Kingsley on 22 minutes and Rui Lima on 47 scored the goals.

Boavista drew 0-0 at West Bromwich Albion, for the English side's 125th anniversary  'New' signing João Pinto played 35 minutes of the second half.

Sporting beat Blackburn 1-0 in the last game of their English tour, Romanian striker Niculae getting the only goal in the first minute of the second half.

Sporting lined up:

Ricardo, Miguel Garcia, Hugo, Miguel Veloso, Paíto, Paulo Sérgio, Rogério, Tinga, Tello, Douala, Carlos Saleiro. Plus: Tiago, Rui Jorge, Niculae, Moutinho, Polga, Djaló.

Beira-Mar grabbed an impressive 3-1 victory over Boavista. Stephen McPhee on 47 (a penalty) and 68, and Rui Lima, formerly of Boavista, on 72 put the score beyond Boavista's reach, but Mlihazes pulled one back on the stroke of time from the spot.

Sporting Braga beat Vitória de Guimarães 2-1 on their own  turf. Dragoner put the home side in front on 35 minutes, Cícero equalised for Braga a minute later and Barroso from the spot gave Brage the win in added time.

An early and late goal put paid to FC Porto in the World Champions Series. Sukur after five and Edem five from the end gave Galatasaray an insurmountable lead, while Porto got a consolation in added time through Maniche.

Sporting beat hosts Newcastle in the final of the Newcastle Tournament. Tello got the only goal on the half hour, a strike from outside the box, to disappoint Newcastle manager Bobby Robson, at Sporting in the early 90s.

Marítimo beat East Bengal to secure third place in the Pepsi Max Challenge, played out in Leicester, England. Souza and Selwyn (own goal) in the firt half and Manduca in the second fixed the final score at 3-0. Leicester won the tournament, beating Mallorca 4-2 in the final.

FC Porto won their first game of the Champions World Series in Toronto Friday, beating Liverpool 1-0 The English side had the better of the first ten minutes, with newcomer Cisse looking particularly useful, but then it was all Porto. Quaresma hit the bar and a post in the first half, but it was not until five minutes from time that Porto got the reward for their superiority, Carlos Alberto stroking the ball in at the back post.

Gil Vicente lost 2-3 at home to Bordeaux in the game to present the Gil team to the fans (4,500 in the new Estádio da Cidade de Barcelos, with capacity for 17,500). Bordeaux were always in front, Belanus and Riera giving them a two-goal lead before Júlio César pulled one back on the half-hour. Meriem gave Bordeuax another in the second half, and Nandinho fixed the final score a quarter of an hour from the end.

Benfica lost their first pre-season game Wednesday, 0-3 against Bétis of Seville in Ayamonte, in the Taça Guadiana. Fernando got one early on and two early in the second half to give himslef a hat-trick and Benfica coach Trapattoni a lot to think about: mistakes in defence and poor finishing.

Benfica lined up:

Moreira, Miguel, Amoreirinha, Argel, Fyssas, Petit, Bruno Aguiar, João Pereira, Zahovic, Simão, Mantorras. Plus: Sokota, Geovanni, Manuel Fernandes, Dos Santos, Paulo Almeida, Quim, Ricardo Rocha.

FC Porto drew their third pre-season game 2-2 against Belgian side Lokeren. Gratasson scored from the spot on 6 minutes to put Lokeren in front, Meireles put the score level on 51,  Bruno Alves gave Porto the lead with a quarter of an hour to go, but Laindu gave Lokeren the draw close to the final whistle.

Benfica failed to win for the first time in this pre-season when they drew 2-2 with Real Madrid at the Centenary game at the Luz. there were two goals in the the first three minutes, from Zahovic and Ronaldo, then Raul had a goal wrongly disallowed shortly afterwards. It was not until the last quarter of an hour that the score changed, Morientes giving Real the lead on 76, but Geovanni made it a relativley happy night for Benfica's 100th birthday celebrations with the equaliser on the stroke of time.

On Saturday, FC Porto won their second game of their spell in Holland, this time 2-0 to Volendam. Quaresma on 27 minutes and Derlei on 64 got the goals.

Sporting are finding it hard to lift off, drawing 2-2 with third division side Casa Pia. Carlos Martins and Paito scored for Sporting.

FC Porto walked through their first pre-season game Thursday against ADO 20 in Holland. César Peixoto, Rossato, Derlei and Jankauskas (2) in the first half and Quaresma and Marco Ferreira in the second got the goals to give the 8-0 scoreline against the fourth division Dutch side.

Vitória de Setúbal, newly promoted to the Superliga, beat English side Bolton 2-0. Meyong in the first half and Pedro Oliveira in the second were the scorers. Bolton  beat Sporting earlier in the week.

Rio Ave struggled to beat Segunda B side Atlético de Valdevez. Paulo César save their blushes on the hour.

Benfica won their third game in a row Wednesday win a 2-0 win over Marseilles. Zahovic was the hero with a well taken goal from outside the area on 13 minutes and a strange free kick two minutes from time, taken while everyone else was standing around talking.

MARSELHA: Gavanon, Ribault, Dehu, Yahaoui, Bamoto (Merlin, 79 m); Koke, N´Diaye, Cheyrou (Pascal, 68 m), Ferreira (Leonardo, 61 m), Olembe, Batiles (Pedretti, 61 m).

A depleted Sporting lost their first serious test Wednesday, going down 1-2 to Bolton at Rio Maior. CarlosMartins put the Lions in front on 43 minutes, but Hassam equalised on the stroke of half-time. Then ten minutes into the second half, Pedersen gave the English club the winner.

Benfica won their second friendly of the pre-season, this time against stiffer opposition than the Swiss Carouge of Saturday: they beat Spanish side Zaragoza 1-0 with a goal by Zahovic after a quarter of an hour.

Benfica beat Étoile Carouge of Switzerland 2-0, with goals from Sokota and Amoreirinha in the first half. the game was marked by two events: the first was the return of Angolan striker Pedro Mantorras, on as sub in the second half, after a long injury; the second was a violent pitch invasion at the end of the game, incited by the rough treatment by stewards of a lone fan who had run onto the pitch.

Sporting hit modest 1º de Maio Sarilhense 10-0 at Sporting's 'Academy' in Alcochete, near Lisbon. Liedson, Danny (2) and Carlos Saleiro made it 4-0 before the break, then Djaló (3), Tello (2) and Paulo Sérgio finished the minnows off.

A rusty Boavista won their first game of the season 1-0 against Rio Tinto in Melgaço, Cafú getting the goal on the hour.
