05/06/06 Holland won the U-21 Championship Final Sunday in front of 22,000 at Boavista´s Bessa Stadium in Porto, beating the Ukraine 3-0. Holland dominated the first half and
went in at half time two up, both goals scored by the impressive official Man-of-the-Match Huntelaar
on 10 and 42 minutes. Ukraine came back well in the second half but were thwarted time and time again by the superb Vermeer in the Dutch goal. Hofs
put the cherry on the cake into added time. Both teams received a standing ovation at the end. The teams lined up: Holland:
Vermeer, Tiendalli, Luirink, Vlaar, Emanuelson, Aissati (Zomer, 78), De Zeeuw, Schaars, Hofs, Huntelaar, Castelen (De Ridder, 68).

with over 200,000 fans seeing the games. A Ukraine player, Dmytro Nevmyvaka, tested positive for a banned substance after Thursday's semi-final against Serbia Montenegro and has
been suspended. 30/05/06The Ukraine and Holland
are through to the semi-finals of the U-21 European Championship, leaving reigning Champions Italy by the wayside. Holland beat Italy 1-0 on the night, while the Ukraine beat Denmark 2-1. Holland now meet
France, while the Ukraine play Serbia-Montenegro, both on Thursday. 29/05/06 Portugal said goodbye to the U-21 European Championship Sunday. Despite beating
Germany 1-0
in their final Group A match, it was not enough to take them through. Portugal needed to win by three clear goals, but it was not until added time at the end of the match that they made the breakthrough, Moutinho
lashing home a Nani cross. The goal put Germany out of the competition also, France and Serbia-Montenegro
(2-0 in the other game of the day) going through to the semis. It was Portugal's first goal in three games of a disappointing tournament, but a fantastic crowd of 28,000
at Vitória de Guimarães' Dom Afonso Henriques stadium gave the young players a standing ovation for their effort on the night. Portugal lined up: Daniel Fernandes, Nélson, José Castro, Rolando, Nuno Morais,
Custódio, Manuel Fernandes (Lourenço 46), Raul Meireles, João Moutinho, Ricardo Quaresma, Varela (Nani 74) 27/05/06 Serbia-Montenegro virtually put paid to Portugal 's chances of progressing in the U-21 Euro Championship Thursday with a 2-0
win that leaves Portugal at the bottom of Group A with no points and no goals. To go through, Portugal need to beat Germany by three goals Sunday and hope that France beat Serbia Montenegro. S-M
's goals were scored by Purovic and Ivanovic.24/05/06 Portugal
got off to a bad start in the U-21 Euro, which kicked off Tuesday. At a packed Estádio Municipal de Braga (30,000), Portugal never had an answer for a super-organised France
who went ahead on 40 minutes, a faulty header from Briand
ballooning onto the bar and dropping down only to be knocked into hius own net by 'keeper Bruno Vale. Portugal managed to make some headway in the second half but were reduced to playing the long game most of the time, which France swallowed up. The score remained at
0-1 until the end. Earlier in the evening, Germany beat Serbia-Montenegro 1-0 in the opening match. 23/05/06 Captain Ricardo Quaresma injured a foot in training and there is a question mark over him for Portugal's opening game versus France
in the U-21 European Championship Tuesday. The tournament kicks off earlier in the evening with Serbia-Montenegro versus Germany. See full list of fixtures here. 14/05/06Agostinho Oliveira

cancelled his press conference Wednesday, apparently unhappy with statements made by National team coach Luíz Felipe Scolari, responding to Oliveira's complaints that he could not work with his squad knowing
that some of them may be removed to be part of the World Cup squad. Scolari said: "Im in charge of the U-21 squad!" U-21 squad member Rolando begged to differ: "The boss of the U-21s is
mister Agostinho, because I don't know Scolari personally, and so I can't say that he's my boss." |
