(Map courtesy of World Sites Atlas) Miscellaneous FactsThe organisation of the tournament was a joint venture between two companies: Euro 2004, S.A. and Portugal 2004, S.A. The former was run by UEFA (54%),
the Portuguese Football Federation (41%) and the Government (5%). The latter was created by the Portuguese Government, which holds 95% of the shares in it. On July 24th, 1999, 34,310 people gathered at the
National Stadium, on the outskirts of Lisbon, to form a giant reproduction of the then-Euro 2004 logo, a publicity stunt that helped to win Portugal the staging of the tournament. It was announced that
Portugal would organise Euro 2004 on October 12th, 1999. The Euro 2004 logo was designed by Euro RSCG Wrek Gosper, based in London, and represents the motto: paixão pelo futebol
('passion for football')
CTT, the Portuguese Post Office, issued a series of stamps to commemorate the event. Go here for more information.Sporting's Alvalade XXI Stadium was the one that has had the most people working on it, peaking at 764. Boavista's Bessa
had the lowest number, just 55. Almost 4,000 workers were involved in the ten stadiums. The tournament mascot was Kinas, a cartoon foam-rubber boy dressed in the
Portuguese kit. He was designed by Warner Brothers. Quinas are the little blue shields on the Portuguese flag, but there was a question of copyright - there is a
Swedish match firm of the same name. Hence the 'K'. The first person inside the suit was Rui Coimbra, 22.
