Vanessa Fernandes, Portugal's best hope for gold, could only manage silver in the women's triathlon in Beijing. It was Portugal's 21st medal in the history of the Olympic games. There have been just three golds: Carlos Lopes for the Marathon in Los Angeles in 1984, Rosa Mota for the Marathon in Seoul in 1988 and Fernanda Ribeiro for the 10,000 metres in Atlanta in 1996.

Nélson Évora won the gold medal in the triple jump at the World Championships in Osaka with a jump of 17.74 (the world record is 18.29). It was the first ever gold medal for Portugal in men's events. Évora's parents are Cape Verdean, but he was born in Ivory Coast and was later naturalised Portuguese. Évora runs for Benfica.

Portugal are out of the Roller Hockey World Championship in Montreux, going down 2-3 to hosts Switzerland after extra time (2-2 at full time). It is the first time in the history of the competition that Portugal have not reached at least the semi-final stage.

Ovarense beat FC Porto 75-68 in the decider of seven games to see who would win this year's basketball league. The game was almost abandoned after Porto fans set off a firework in the Ovarense pavillion. It was Ovarense's second title in a row.

FC Porto are national roller-hockey champions for the sixth year running after beating eternal rival Benfica 5-0 in the third play-off game; they had already won the first two.

The Portugal Rugby Union team have qualified for the World Cup for the first time in the history of Portuguese rugby. They lost 12-18 to Uruguay in Montevideo on Saturday, but had won 12-5 in Lisbon so go through on points. Portugal will be the only amateurs playing at the World Cup which will be held in France in September. They will be in Group C and up against some mighty opposition: New Zealand, Scotland, Italy ad Romania.

Roller Hockey is a big sport in Portugal - Portugal are one of the top countries in the world -  but it will never be the same after Oliveirense, 4th  in the league, beat Portosantense, 5th , by the record score of 63-0 (sixty-three-nil). Portosantense had three players injured and four suspended, so had to field juniors. The rate of scoring was one goal every 47.6 seconds.

Portugal's basketball team have qualified for the European Championship for only the second time in their history - the last was in 1951. Portugal beat Israel 69-49 in the last Group B qualifier. The championship will take place in Spain in September of next year.

David Blanco won the time trial between Idanha-a-Nova and Castelo Branco Tuesday in the tenth and final stage of the 68th Volta a Portugal. The Spanish rider thus becomes the 13th foreigner to win the race overall and succeeds Vladimir Efimkin, who won last year.

Francis Obikwelu won a second gold (see below) at the European Athletics Championships being held in Gothenburg, this time in the 200 metres. He strode to victory with a time of 20.01 seconds, a Portuguese record and the best European time of the year. The Swede Johan Wissman (20.38) and the British sprinter Marlon Devonish (20.54) finished in second and third.

Francis Obikwelu won gold Tuesday in the 100 metres at the European Athletics Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden. Despite a bad start, he glided home in 9.99 seconds, ahead of the Russian Andrey Yepishin and the Slovenian Matic Osovnikar.

Portugal came third in the roller-hockey European Championship held in Monza, beating hosts Italy 5-4 in the play-off. Spain beat Switzerland 2-0 in the Final.

Unlike the so-far successful football Selecção, Portugal failed in two other sports this weekend. The volleyball team failed to win a place in the 2007 European Championship  after going down 2-3 to Bielorussia in Minsk. Meanwhile, the handball team failed entry into the 2007 World Cup, winning 26-25 over the Ukraine but losing on aggregate.

FC Porto won the roller hockey Taça de Portugal, beating Juventude de Viana 7-4 in the Final in Mealhada.

Portugal were knocked out of the European Handball Championship taking place in Switzerland when they went down 27-37 to Norway Sunday. They had already lost their other two Group D games against Croatia and Russia. All the other three teams qualify for the next phase.

Vladimir Efimkin won the Volta a Portugal Sunday, the first Russian to do so, beating out close challenger Cândido Barbosa of Portugal by just 34 seconds. The final time-trial stage was won by the Dane Claus Möller, who finished 7th in the overall.

Portugal came third in the Roller Hockey World Championship, beating Italy 4-3. Spain won the title with a 2-1 win over Argentina in the Final in San José, California.

Portugal were 30th in terms of medals and 24th in terms of points in the Athletics World Championship in Helsinki. Portugal won two bronze medals: Susana Feitor (walking) and Rui Silva (1500 metres).

FC Porto added the Taça de Portugal to the Championship title Sunday when they beat Benfica in the final of roller hockey. It was 2-2 at full time, there were no goals in extra time and Porto won on penalties.

Formula One driver Tiago Monteiro could do no better than 13th place in the French Grand Prix, but he is still the first-time driver with most finishes in this edition.

Tiago Monteiro made history Sunday by becoming the first Portuguese driver ever to find his way onto the winners' podium in a Formula One Grand Prix. He came third in the American Grand Prix in Indianapolis. There were only six cars in the race, 14 having pulled out due to a dispute over the tyres to be used.

Portugal qualified for the European Championship of Handball Sunday by beating the Czech Republic 32-24 in the second leg of the qualifying round (they had lost the first leg 27-28). The Finals will be held in Switzerland in January. The other teams to have qualified are: France, Iceland, Ukraine, Slovenia, Hungary, Spain, Norway, Serbia- Montenegro and Poland.

Queluz are this year's National Basketball Champions, beating Ovarense 63-58 Thursday to take the final series 3-0. American David Vik was the hero on the night with 17 points. Queluz were finalists last year but lost out 3-1 to FC Porto.

Portugal lost their first game Thursday of the European Handball Championship being held in Slovenia. After starting well against Denmark, they eventually went down 36-32. In the other game in Group B, Croatia controversially beat Spain in the final seconds, although Spain claim that the goal that made it 30-29 was scored after the final hooter.

Portugal are World Roller Hockey Champions for the 15th time. In a pulsating final Saturday they beat Italy 1-0, but the game, characterised by the cagey tactics of both teams and dominated both goalkeepers, went to extra-time before captain Pedro Alves got the deciding goal, two and a half minutes before the end. The last minutes were taken up with Portugal keeping possesson and denying Italy the chance to counter, while 3,500 delirious Portuguese were on their feet waiting for the final whistle. When it came, there was pandemonium.

Spain earned third place with a 3-1 win over Argentina.

The Portuguese basketball league 'kicked off' Thursday. On the first day, FC Porto beat old  rivals Benfica 80-62.

Meanwhile, Portugal are into the semi-finals of the roller-hockey World Championship being played out in Portugal. They beat Brazil 4-1 in the quarter finals Thursday and will meet Argentina, who beat Switzerland 7-1, in the semis. In the other semi-final, Spain and Italy will fight it out to see who goes through.

Portugal thrashed their Dutch counterparts 12-0 on the second day (Monday) of the Roller-Hockey World Cup, currently being held in Portugal. Earlier in the evening, Mozambique gave Spain a scare, taking them all the way to the line before Spain scored a minute from the end to make it 3-2.

Lisbon will host the 2004 Laureus World Sports Awards, a type of Oscar ceremony for sports, inaugurated in 2000. The ceremony will be held from May 8th to 11th at the Central Cultural de Belém on the outskirts of Lisbon. The ceremony will be watched by  360 million TV viewers.

Long-distance athlete Carlos Calado is in mourning after his wife and two sons died at the weekend. The athlete was running in Madeira and shortly after the race was told that his whole family had died, probably caused by gas from a faulty water-heater at their home in the Algarve. They were buried Tuesday.

Croatia were crowned World Champions Sunday after beating Germany 34-31 in an exciting final of the Handball World Cup, held in Lisbon. France got the bronze by beating Spain 27-22 in the third-place play-off.

Croatia beat Spain 39-37 in the Handball World Cup , being held in Portugal, to go through to the final, where they will meet Germany. Croatia were 9-14 down to the Spanish at half-time, but they clawed their way back to finish even at 26-26. It took two periods of extra-time to separate the two teams. Spain play France, who went down 22-23 to Germany, for third place.

Óquei de Barcelos beat Benfica 4-3 away Saturday in the Roller Hockey league. FC Porto lead the table, followed by Infante de Sagres, Óquei and Benfica.

Portugal said goodbye to the possibility of qualifying for the Olympic Games Wednesday when they lost 28-30 to Yugoslavia; they needed to win to secure at least seventh place in the Handball World Cup, currently being played out in various towns and cities in Portugal. Portugal had a dismal first half, failing many attacks and leaking goals. They improved in the second half, and were catching Yugoslavia up by the end, but time ran out for them.

Portugal are through to the second phase of the Handball World Cup where they will play in the same group as Germany, Yugoslavia and Tunisia. In their final two games in the preliminary group stage, Portugal lost 29-37 to Germany on Saturday but beat Australia 42-20 Sunday to finish in third place in Group B behind Germany and Iceland. Portugal play Yugoslavia on Wednesday.

Portugal lost for the first time and against their toughest opposition so far Thursday in the Handball World Cup. They were 13-14 down to Iceland at half-time of a pulsating match, but at one point in the second half were in the lead by two goals. This could have been extended to three goals but Carlos Resende missed a 7-metre free, and Iceland clawed their way back into it, going to 29-28 with half a minute left. Portugal did all in their power to get the goal back, but the game finished on that score. Friday is another rest day in the tournament.

Portugal won for the second time in the Handball World Cup Tuesday, beating Qatar 31-21 but not convincing. They now share top spot in Group B with Germany and Iceland. Wednesday is a rest day. Games resume on Thursday with Portugal v Iceland, a much stiffer test for the Portuguese than their previous two games.

Portugal got off to a flying start in the men's Handball World Cup, which has just got underway in Portugal. They beat Greenland without any problems 34-19 in their first Group B game. also in Group B are Germany, Iceland, Australia and Qatar.

The Handball World Cup begins today in Portugal. The hosts are not exepected to win the competition, although home advantage may be enough to take them into the top seven, which will mean immediate qualification for the next Olympic Games. Portugal's first game is against Greenland.

Portugal Telecom crushed FC Porto 109-67 on the third day of the National Basketball Championship. The hero was American Marcus Norris with 23 points and eight assists.

Portugal lost 2-3 to Greece in their last game at the volleyball World Cup in Argentina, a result that left them in eighth place. Even so, it was the best result ever in Portuguese men's volleyball.

Portugal's Volleyball World Cup came to an abrupt end when they lost Wednesday to reigning champions Yugoslavia 0-3 (20-25, 23-25 and 16-25) in the quarter finals. It was a predictable end to a marvellous run, in which the Portuguese beat China, Australia, Spain and Poland. Portugal can still come fifth if they win their remaining games.

Rui Silva won Newcastle's Great North Run (mile) Saturday, beating the Russian Vyacheslav Shabunin in the sprint. In the Women's event, Carla Sacramento was sixth in a race won by the Turkey's Sureyya Ayhan.

The Estoril racing circuit will host the 11th Motorcycling Grand Prix of the season at the weekend. Two Cuban fencers, Elvis Gregory and Ivan Trebejo, did not return with the Cuban national team after the World Fencing Championships, held recently in Lisbon. Gregory was World vice-champion in 1998, while Trebejo won a silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. The two men are missing, but the Portuguese authorities cannot launch a search for them because they are for the moment in the country legally. It is believed that they may seek political asylum. Rui Silva was the best European when he came third in the 1500 metres at the athletics meeting in Zürich Friday. The Morrocan Hicham el Geurrouj won the race with the best time of the year for the distance: 3.26,89 minutes.

The World Fencing Championship begins in Lisbon Saturday. 754 fencers will compete in the various classes.

On a thrilling final day of the Volta a Portugal, it was a Dane, Claus Möller, who pipped his teammate, the Catalan Joan Horrach, to the individual title. Going into the final stage (23.9 kms, time trial, Queluz-Sintra), Möller was 48 seconds behind Horrach, but he bettered him on this final stage by 53 seconds, winning the Volta by five seonds!

Their team, Maia-Milaneza-MSS, scooped most of the prizes: the team trophy, the first three places in the individual competition (Möller, Horrach and the Portuguese Rui Sousa), the green jersey (Angel Edo), the mountain (Gonçalo Amorim) and six of the thirteen stages. It's the second year running that the team has won the Volta.

Möller said: "The Vuelta de España is my next objective", while crestfallen Horrach said: "I don't know if I'll ever be that close to winning again."

Angel Edo of Maia Milaneza-MSS won the 12th and penultimate stage (167.9 kms, Elvas-Beja) of the Volta a Portugal Wednesday. Joan Horrach still holds the yellow jersey. Portuguese cyclist Cândido Barbosa took part in the stage after threatening not to; he had been disqualified in Tuesday's race for an infringement during the sprint. He was placed last in the Peloton, and the stage given to Joan Horrach. Horrach has a 45 and 48 second advantage respectively over Maia Milaneza-MSS teammates Rui Sousa and Claus Moller.

The final stage on Thursday (a national holiday in Portugal) is a 23.9 km time trial between Queluz and Sintra on the outskirts of Lisbon.

The Bulgarian Daniel Petrov of the Porta da Ravessa team won the 10th stage (161.5 kms, Covilhã-Portalegre) of the Volta a Portugal Monday. The Spaniard Joan Horrach still has the yellow jersey.

Francis Obikwelu won his second silver in two days in the 200 metres at the European Championship in Munich. His time of 20.21 was a national record. The greek runner Kenteris got the gold with a time of 19.85.

David Muñoz of Kelme won the seventh stage of the Volta a Portugal Friday (182.4 kms, Cantanhede-Alcobaça). Juan Horrach of Spain came in with the pelotón 49 seconds after the winner and maintains the yellow jersey.

Portugal bowed out of the World Volleyball League Group A with a 1-3 defeat to Poland in Wroclaw. The League gives qualification for the World Championship in Argentina in September/ October; Brasil and Poland qualified from Portugal's group.

éJos Azevedo finished the Tour in sixth place in the overall standings. The position makes him unofficially the second best Portuguese cyclist ever after the legendary Joaquim Agostinho, who got two third places in 1978 and '79. It is widely felt that Azevedo could have done even better if he hadn't had to drop back in some stages to support ONCE teammates. With a fifth place in last year's Giro d'Italia also under his belt, local hopes are that Azevedo, 28, can go on to even greater things. ( A Bola On-line)

Portugal beat Argentina 3-1 Saturday in the fifth game of Group A of the World Volleyball League , being held in Lisbon. In the sixth game Sunday, also against Argentina, Portugal won 3-2 and climbed to second in the group, behind Brazil.

Portuguese José Azevedo , riding for Spanish team ONCE, is 8th in the overall standings in the Tour after finishing in the pelotón Sunday.

Naide Gomes beat her own national long-jump record at the Portuguese Championship Sunday with an effort of 6m57.

Portugal are through to the final of the Roller Hockey European Championship in Florence after beating France 4-2 Friday. They will meet Spain, who beat the hosts Italy 7-2, in the final.

Portugal are 0-2 down in their Euro-African Group I Davis Cup match against Belarus, Bernardo Mota and Hélder Lopes both losing their singles matches.

The International Motorcycling Federation has announced that the Portuguese Grand Prix for 125 cc, 250 cc and GP will be held at the Estoril track on September 7th.

Portugal thrashed Germany 8-0 in the Roller-Hockey Euros Thursday. This follows yet another victory Wednesday, 4-2 against the hosts Italy. Portugal go through with ease to the semi-finals with four wins, no defeats, 46 goals for and two against.

Portugal continued their good start to the Roller Hockey Euros by beating Holland 12-0 Tuesday. They meet the hosts Italy Wednesday, which will be a different proposition.

The State became the full owners of the Autódromo do Estoril Friday when the Grão-Pará group signed over their 49% share in the track to the State bank Caixa Geral de Depósitos, in lieu of debts to the bank of 35 million euros. The State already owned 51% of the track. The way is now clear for negotiations to be taken up again to have the Formula One Grand Prix back at Estoril.

Portugal´s best known motor racing driver, Pedro Lamy, will take part in the 24 hour Le Mans race on June 15/16th. He will be driving for the Playstation-Oreca team

Portugal became World Champions in basquetebol para deficientes Saturday when they beat Poland 93-63 in the final in Funchal, Madeira.

Benfica drew 5-5 with FC Porto in the final game of the Roller Hockey league Saturday. FC Porto had already been crowned this year's Champions
