Transfer News - 2003



União de Leiria have been banned by FIFA from signing any players from abroad. UDL have not paid for the Ghanaian Duah that they bought from Spanish club Mallorca in 1997. The transfers of midfielder Viveros and ´keeper Helton are on hold until the situation can be resolved. (A Bola On-line)

Benfica have given up on Parma's Brazilian right-back Júnior. Neither the clubs nor the player could agree on terms. (A Bola)

But they are now apparently in a race (with FC Porto and other clubs, notably Premiership side Sunderland) to sign União de Leiria's midfielder Silas (real name Jorge Manuel Rebelo Fernandes). Silas, 26, recently made his début for the National 'B' Team. (A Bola)


Bordeaux 's Portuguese striker Pauleta will not now be moving anywhere, at least until the end of the season. Pauleta has a year and a half left on his contract with the French club.


English Premiership club Manchester City are keen to sign Bordeaux's Pauleta on a three-and-a-half year contract. The ball is in the player's court, but the club will only wait until Sunday - the deadline for transfers in England finishes on January 31st. Pauleta has scored almost 80 goals for the French side in just two seasons and was recently voted the best foreigner playing in Fance. ( A Bola On-line)

Another Portuguese international on the move is Liverpool's Abel Xavier, loaned out to Galatasaray until the end of the season.


Fábio Júnior of Roma, currently on loan to Brazilian club Cruzeiro, has signed for Vitória de Guimarães on loan until the end of the season. Vitória's president Pimenta Machado has admitted that the signing of the Brazilian is a move to win support ahead of the upcoming elections at the club.

It looks as though the loan move of Abel Xavier from Liverpool to Galatasaray is going ahead. The defender will sign for six months, with an option for an extension of this. (A Bola On-line)


Sporting midfielder Carlos Martins, 20, has joined lowly Académica on loan until the end of the season. The player has not been a first choice at Alvalade and wanted first team football.

Sporting Braga's Brazilian midfielder Zé Roberto has signed a six-month contract with Elazigspor of Turkey. The player was considered a great promise at Braga but has been dogged by injuries.


Struggling Beira-Mar have signed Paraguayan central defender Antolin Alcaraz, 20, formerly of Fiorentina. The contract is for four years.


Benfica have loaned Brazilian right-back Éder to Segunda club Estrela da Amadora until the end of the season.

According to the Liverpool official website, Turkish club Galatasaray want to borrow defender Abel Xavier until the end of the season.


Boavista are to sign midfielder Filipe Anunciação from Segunda club Desportivo das Aves on a four-and-a-half year contract. The 23-year-old was previously at Boavista and was sold to Aves, but has impressed with his poerfomances this year. Boavista´s midfield has been weakened by the sale of Petit to Benfica and the injuries to Jorge Silva and Erwin Sanchez.

The transfer of Brazilian striker Gaúcho to South Korean side Suwon Samsung has fallen through. Marítimo president Carlos Pereira has decided that the club's top scorer, and equal top scorer in the SuperLiga, is too important for the Madeiran side's league campaign.


Sporting Braga have signed central defender Emerson, 24, of Rio de Janeiro side Vasco da Gama until the end of the season. The player is seen as a direct replacement for Odair, who recently transferred to Belenenses and will make his début for the Lisbon side against FC Porto this weekend. Out of Braga goes central defender Nuno Mendes, who will sign a five-month contract with struggling Moreirense Monday.

Benfica are hoping to sign Parma left back Júnior on loan. The deal is set to go through in the coming week.

English Premiership club Sunderland are in the race for União de Leiria midfielder Silas, recently picked to play for the Portuguese 'B' side. First Division club Wolverhampton are also interested, and the player could be on his way north by the end of January.


Marítimo's Brazilian striker Gaúcho , 30, top scorer in the SuperLiga with ten goals (along with Benfica's Simão) is set to sign for Japanese club Yokohama Marinos. Gaúcho moved to Estrela da Amadora seven years ago from Brazilian club Sport Recife and signed for the Madeiran club last season.

Benfica full-back Cabral has turned down a loan move to Dutch first Division club Roosendaal. the club already has Portuguese David Nascimento in its ranks.


FC Porto midfielder Bruno will return on loan to his previous club Marítimo until the end of the season. He has not had many chances to shine since moving to Porto at the beginning of this season. Also confirmed for Marítimo is Danny, sold to Sporting but unable to make his mark there.

FC Porto's Portuguese U-21 international forward Cândido Costa will play for Vitória de Setúbal until the end of the season.

Sporting Braga 's Brazilian central defender Odair will sign for Belenenses next week. Details of the transfer are not yet known.

Nacional de Madeira have signed Brazilian ´keeper Marcelo Cruz from Marília SP on a four-year contract.


Colombian midfielder Viveros has signed for Boavista on a two-and-a-half year contract. Boavista have aquired half the player's pass from Brazilian club Cruzeiro. Viveros is seen as direct substitute for defensive midfielder Jorge Silva, out with a knee injury.


Brazilian striker Serginho, released by Boavista at the beginning of the month, will be a Paços de Ferreira player until the end of the season. He will fill a space left by Mauro, who has joined Belenenses. (A Bola On-line)

According to the Italian sports press, Inter Milan may be interested in signing Sporting's young winger Ricardo Quaresma, if their attempts to sign Joaquín of Spanish club Real Bétis fail. (A Bola On-line)

Forward Pascal, 22, has swapped Nacional for Vitória de Setúbal on a year-and-a-half contract, with two more as optional. (infordesporto)


Brazilian right back Anderson Lima of Grêmio of Porto Alegre (Southern Brazil) is on the shopping list of Benfica, according to Brazilian site futbrasil.com. Lima, 29, ends his contract with Grêmio on December 31st. He played previously for Santos, Guarani and São Paulo. Benfica are also interested in the right-winger Manu of Segunda club Alverca.(infordesporto)

Sporting's midfielder Ricardo Fernandes, who started the season brightly but has not been a regular recently, is a possible reinforcement for either Sporting Braga or Vitória de Setúbal. Vitória will lose Marco Ferreira to FC Porto in January and need midfield cover. Despite the interest of these clubs, however, coach Laszlo Bölöni may want to hang onto him. (infordesporto/ O Jogo)

The Argentinian forward Fernando Cavenaghi of River Plate may end up at Sporting, at least for six months. Juventus have acquired rights to the player, but as they have an excess of non-EU players, Sporting are trying to borrow him until the end of the season.


Boavista have signed 20-year-old striker Yuri from Segunda club FC Maia on a four-and-a-half year contract. Central defender Saul will go the other way. Boavista's president João Loureiro said that the club will proceed to re-shuffle the squad when the transfer window opens in January. Brazilian striker Serginho has already been released.

Sporting's Ghanaian striker Ayew could be heading for China. He has six months left on his contract but has not been an option for coach Laszlo Bölöni and has been training with the 'B' team. Ayew was a key player in Sporting's first tittle in 18 years in the 1999-2000 season.
