11/05/02 Sporting won the Taça de Portugal Sunday against Segunda B side Leixões, although it was sometimes difficult to discern which team was from the lower
division, such was the class and commitment of Leixões and the apathy and lack of ideas of a tired-looking Sporting side. The inevitable Jardel
got the only goal five minutes before half-time, receiving a pass from Pedro Barbosa in an offside position and slotting the ball past the excellent Ferreira in the Leixões goal. Sporting have now won the double (
Liga and Taça) and qualify at least for the preliminary rounds of the Champions League. Leixões qualify for the UEFA cup. (See Match Reports)
24/04/02 The final of the Taça de Portugal, to be played on May 12th between Sporting and Segunda B side Leixões, will kick off at 17.00, the Portuguese Football Federation
announced Tuesday. The game will be televised by independent terrestrial channel SIC. The 33,000 tickets available are already sold out. (A Bola) 31/01/02 Marítimo
advanced to the semi-finals of the Taça Wednesday, knocking out Salgueiros in their quarter-final replay. It was a dour match that ended 0-0
after 120 minutes. The penalties were the high point of the game. Fourteen were scored before Marco Freitas missed the fifteenth for Salgueiros. Jorge Soares
didn't miss the sixteenth for Marítimo and the side from Madeira were through, 8-7 on penalties.. 21/01/02 The draw for the semi-finals of the Taça
took place on Monday and coupled Sporting Braga with Leixões and Sporting with the winner of the quarter final replay between Marítimo and Salgueiros, to be played on January 30th.
The Sporting semi will be played on February 4th, the Braga semi on February 21st. 17/01/02 The quarter-finals of the Taça threw up a couple of shocks Wednesday. Leixões, of the IIB, beat
Portimonense of the Segunda 3-1. The hero was Antchouet who scored the opening and closing goals for his side. In between, Detinho had made it 2-0 and Mendão
had pulled one back for the Algarve club. At the Antas, FC Porto's recent poor form continued with a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Sporting Braga. Porto had a chance to go in front on 23 minutes but
Jorge Andrade shot a penalty weakly at Braga 'keeper Quim. Porto did get in front in the second half with a header from Capucho from a cross by Secretário, but on 25 minutes Castanheira
cracked in a superb swerving drive from 30 metres out, and three minutes later Idalécio
met a Castanheira corner at the near post to glance the ball past Baía with his head. Porto coach Augusto Inácio went off to a sea of white handkerchiefs in the Porto crowd. Portistas are not happy.
There were no shocks at Vila Real, where Sporting ran out comfortable 4-0 winners, Luís Filipe and André Cruz (a penalty) in the first half and Luís Filipe again and Quaresma
in the second providing the goals. Primeira sides Salgueiros and Marítimo will have to play again after 120 minutes of play could not separate them. Gaúcho
put Marítimo in front in the first minutes, but Masi and Toy scored to give Salgueiros the lead before half-time. On 58, Gaúcho
popped up again to equalise for the visitors, and they went into extra-time. But the score remained at 2-2. The semi-finals of the Taça will be played on February 12th. 09/01/02 Sporting
struggled but finally got the upper hand over Alverca in their sixth round replay at Alvalade, winning by 2-1. Alverca went ahead in the first half with a first-time strike by Zeferino
from a pass across the face of the goal by Cajú. Sporting hit the post twice in the first half and once in the second, but it was left to sub João Pinto
to draw the teams level in the second half with a shot into the roof of the net from close range. Mário Jardel
got the winner with a penalty, Tinaia bringing down another sub, Quaresma, in the area. He saw the red card for that, but later, Phil Babb and Tello also saw red, which means they will miss Saturday's Primeira
clássico at Porto (unless the club can get their cards quashed). Sporting travel to Vila Real of the Segunda B in the quarter-finals. 08/01/02
The draw was made Monday for the quarter finals of the Taça de Portugal. The highlights of the draw are the Primeira clashes between FC Porto and Sporting Braga, and between Salgueiros
and Marítimo. (Full draw) 28/12/01 Alverca held
Sporting to a 0-0 draw after extra-time Friday in the fifth round of the Taça. The great hero of the night was Alverca's 'keeper Yannick, who made a series of exceptional saves. The two
teams replay on January 9th. 20/12/01 Benfica are out of all competitions except the Primeira after losing 0-1 in their fourth round replay against Marítimo
in Madeira. One goal did it, a header by Dutch defender van der Gaag after 17 minutes from a free-kick deep on the right by Bruno, who may be on his way to the Luz. Sporting Braga
dispatched northern rivals Vitória de Guimarães 2-1 in their replay. Barata got both the Braga goals, Flamarion replying when there was no time to turn it around. In another replay,
Caçadores das Taipas of the Segunda B put out Estarreja of the Terceira (Third Division) by 3-2 after extra time. Reinan and Gringo
had twice given the visitors the lead in normal time, only to see it cancelled out by Mário and Sequeira. Roberto Lima got the winner five minutes from the end of extra time. 14/12/01
There were some upsets in the Taça Wednesday, and the Primeira clubs didn't have it all their own way. The biggest upset was Vila Real of the Segunda B with their 2-1
victory over Primeira side Beira-Mar, who won the Cup in 1999. Demétrios put Beira-Mar in front in the first minutes, but Tiago Martins just before half time and Fredy
just before the end put Vila Real through to the sixth round. The Grandes had mixed fortunes. League Champions Boavista continued their bad run of form (five games now without a win) by losing 0-1
at home to lowly Primeira side Alverca, Tinaia scoring from a free kick. Sporting were ultimately comfortable 4-1 winners at home to Farense, although the visitors went in front
on 50 minutes from Bruno Mestre. Young winger Quaresma
continued his burst of good form with the equaliser, but it took a controversial penalty for an inexistent handball 15 minutes from the end by Fernando Porto (taken by Jardel) to break Farense's resistance. Sub
André Cruz scored from an acute angle on 79 to give Sporting some breathing space, and Jardel got his second on the stroke of time to make it 4-1. FC Porto struggled to shake off Santa Clara
and they needed extra time to do it. Paredes put them in front in normal time and Vítor Vieira equalised for Santa Clara. Hélder Postiga, on as sub for Esnaider at half time, got the winner on 105
minutes to sighs of relief all round - with all the games they've been playing, the last thing Porto wanted was a trip to the Azores for the replay. Benfica
once again failed to impress, putting increasing pressure on their coach Toni. Their game against Marítimo was goalless until extra time when Quim
put the Madeiran side in front with a superb solo effort. It was left to sub Zahovic, returning after injury, to tap in an easy equaliser (1-1) on 116 minutes. There were two other all-Primeira
ties. Vitória de Guimarães and Sporting Braga will have to play again next week after they drew 2-2 after extra time. Barata put Braga in front and Flamarion
equalised from the spot, all in the first half. Then Lima restored Braga's lead and Ceará equlised for Vitória for the second time, all in extra-time. Improving Paços de Ferreira put out Vitória
de Setúbal. Vitória went in front early on through Marco Ferreira, but Paços settled the game in the first half with goals by Jurandir and Carlos Carneiro. Salgueiros
had difficulty eliminating Naval of the Segunda (2-3) but managed it with a goal by Litera early in extra time. Sérgio Lavos and José Carlos had provided the goals for Naval,
João Pedro Salgueiros's other two. For other fifth round results, see Taça
Results. The draw for the sixth round of the Taça will be on Monday 17/12. 12/12/01 Belenenses proved too strong for their third division opponents Sacavenense
Tuesday and won 5-0 to go through to the fifth round of the Taça. Belenenses' goals were scored by César Peixoto, Verona, Tuck and Gerson (2). Also through are Académica de Coimbra
who beat Sanjoanense away 1-0, Paulo Adriano getting the solitary goal. Belenenses and Académica de Coimbra join Académica de Viseu
in the fifth round. The rest of the fourth round games are to be played on Wednesday 12/02. 22/11/01 The draw was made Monday for the fifth round of the Taça de Portugal. The draw
threw up difficult ties against Primeira opposition for the Four Grandes: Boavista have to get past Alverca at home, FC Porto meet Santa Clara, Sporting take on Farense and Benfica face Marítimo. There is
also an intriguing local derby between Primeira sides Vitória de Guimarães and Sporting Braga. The games will be played on or around December 12th, with any replays scheduled for December 19th. Extra-time
is played in the first game if it is a draw after 90 minutes. The full draw is as follows: Belenenses (I) v Sacavenense (III)
Boavista (I) v Alverca (I) V. Guimarães (I) v Sp. Braga (I) V. Setúbal (I) v Paços de Ferreira (I) Sporting (I) v Farense (I) Louletano (II B) v Sintrense (III) Vila Real (II B) v Beira-Mar (I)

There were no big upsets in the fourth round of the Taça Sunday, although there were several goleadas ('thrashings'). Sporting Espinho and Leixões of the Segunda and Segunda B
respectively managed to take Salgueiros and Varzim of the Primeira
to a replay, while Alverca beat Sáo Pedro de Cova 6-1, Farense travelled to Estrela de Portalegre to win 5-1, Portimonense put seven past Caldas and Sintrense beat Camacha 5-1 after extra time. (See results) The draw for the fifth round of the Taça
will take place on Tuesday, November 20th in Lisbon. 18/11/01 Benfica, FC Porto and Sporting all got through to the fifth round of the Taça
with wins over lowly opposition Saturday. Benfica beat Infesta of the Segunda B 3-0
but had to work hard for the victory, Infesta showing themselves to be a resourceful team on obviously limited resources. Benfica hit the post twice in the first half (Mantorras and Miguel) before a bit of luck gave them the lead on 38 minutes,
Marcelo turning a Mantorras shot-cum-cross into his own net. Two minutes later, Mantorras was brought down by Bruno and Drulovic
scored from the spot. It was not until added time in the second half that Benfica managed to find the net again, this time a header by Porfirio from a cross by Cabral. Sporting were also up against
Segunda B opposition, Vilanovense, and this time the minnows took the lead on 32 minutes through Nuno Rocha. It was left to Super Mário Jardel
to equalise on the stroke of half time, and the same player got two more in the last ten minutes to spare Sporting's blushes. FC Porto had a tougher prospect on paper, Segunda side
Estrela da Amadora, relegated from the Primeira last season. But Porto had less trouble than the other Grandes, and their three goals had a distinctly international feel: Swede Soderstrom
on 14 minutes, Argentinian Esnaider four minutes later and Brazilian Clayton after an hour to leave the score at 3-0. The biggest shock of the day came with Penafiel
, languishing at the bottom of the Segunda, putting out Primeira side Gil Vicente with a convincing 3-1 result. Douala
put Gil in front just after half time, but two goals in eight minutes from Paulo Torres and Filipe Azevedo turned the game around, and Marco Almeida
put the result beyond doubt on the stroke of time. Atlético, at the foot of the Segunda B, scored after only ten minutes at Primeira club Vitória de Setúbal
, and the optimism lasted until the 52nd minutes when Hugo Alcântara equalised. Two minutes from time, Jean Paulista ruined the Atlético party with the winner, 2-1. (See Results) 17/11/01 Boavista beat Primeira rivals
União de Leiria 3-0 at the Bessa stadium Friday to go through to the fifth round of the Taça de Portugal. It was a dour match (Pedro Emanuel and Sanchez
may be ruled out of Tuesday's Champions League match with Nantes) with little football of note, and Boavista only managed to break the deadlock in the 30 minutes of extra time after normal time finished at 0-0 (see Match Reports)
13/11/01 Infesta of the Segunda B have switched their fourth round home tie with the mighty Benfica to the Estádio Dr. Vieira de Carvalho in Maia. The Maia stadium offers more capacity for
what is sure to be a sell-out and better facilities for TV coverage. The game has been brought forward from Sunday to Saturday 17/11/01 at 19.00. (infordesporto) 12/11/01
The third round of the Taça was completed Sunday. The result of the day was Leixões of the Segunda B beating Chaves of the Segunda 1-0. (See results) 10/11/01 Estrela da Amadora of the Segunda beat
Torreense of the Segunda B 4-1 Friday to go through to the fourth round of the Taça. Nuno Cavaleiro put Estrela in front on five minutes but Igor
equalised on 35. In the second half, Estrela put their foot on the gas and finished their visitors off with goals from Nuno Cavaleiro again, Hugo Carreira and Marciano. Estrela will meet FC Porto
in the fourth round at Porto's Antas stadium. (infordesporto) 07/11/01 Benfica travel to Infesta, of the Segunda B
(equivalent to the Nationwide Second Division in England) for the fourth round of the Taça de Portugal. The coach of Infesta is Augusto Mata, 59, who has been the coach of the club for 28
(twenty-eight) years! (maisfutebol) 06/11/01 The draw was made Monday for the fourth round of the Taça de Portugal. Most Primeira clubs missed each other, but Boavista
